'Welcome Stranger' is based on an unusual 18th and 19th century tradition where expectant mothers were gifted pincushions with 'Welcome Little Stranger' or similar words to that effect, studded out in pins. This was not only a practical gift for a Georgian era mother to be, but also came with the understanding that 200+ years ago, the baby's gender was
